Messages from the Wild Education Programme
An interactive learning programme for 7 to 11 year olds
Messages from the Wild have created Lesson Plans in order to encourage children to record their own ‘interviews with animals’.
If you would like to be part of this programme please email: firstname.lastname@example.org
Ms Barnham is a Primary School Teacher in Bristol and has been piloting the education programme.
“I’m always looking for ways to get the children to learn and recall and I was fascinated by what it was about these interviews that made me remember all of those facts. I know if I had read it in a transcript or watched it in a documentary, that wouldn’t have happened, it was something to do with the relationship between the animal and the interviewer that was so powerful.
I have a totally different relationship with, for example, the stag beetle now than I ever would have had before – and with that relationship comes empathy and understanding.
The children are already passionate about wildlife and the environment but I think they’ve seen this as a strategy for having a voice. By being these animals, and creating these interviews, they are very excited about other people hearing them and they feel that it might have that impact. They can feel the power of them.
They want to change people’s mindsets, and it’s as if they feel like they’ve been given a voice and a way to perhaps change people’s attitudes. They see it as a way of initiating change in others.”
